Local Area Network (LAN)

Local Area Networking (LAN) systems allow for multiple machines to network resources while providing much greater security than a Peer to Peer network. The number of computers attached to the network is limited only by physical proximity of the machines and sophistication of the network hardware.

Advantages:

Higher level of security for sensitive information.
Less performance loss from shared resources than Peer to Peer.
Allows for central administration of shared resources.
Scales well; can grow with your company.

Disadvantages:

Server Operating System (Windows NT, Linux, Unix) needed for optimum performance.
Network Administrator strongly recommended for maintenance.
Greatest length of network cable is 300 ft. unless signal repeater is included.

Customer needs to determine:

What resources are needed and should be shared or kept private.
Security and access levels for different users on network.
Workgroup configuration, user names, and logon scripts.

Customer should make arrangements for:

Network Administrator training.
Internet account, if needed.
User training for use of shared resources, software, and networking protocols.
Plenum Cable to be used in multi-floor office buildings due to fire codes.
