Peer to Peer Networking

Peer to Peer networking allows for sharing files and printers among several computers. For a network of more than ten systems, a dedicated file server is recommended. Peer to Peer connections can be made by either BNC coaxial cables "daisy chained" between systems or with RJ45 cables to a central hub.

Advantages:

Low cost.
Easily maintained.
Allows for simple network integration of several computers for file/print sharing and/or internet connection sharing.

Disadvantages:

Low security.
Performance decreases as other users share one system’s resources.
Some proprietary software systems are difficult to share or cannot be shared.
Does not scale well.

Peer to Peer networking is recommended for small offices, home business or families with two or more systems.

Customer needs to determine:

Is security an issue for any data or programs on network?
Will resource sharing be more than systems can reasonably handle?
Will cables be daisy chained or connected to a hub?
What resources will be on which system?

Customer should make arrangements for:

Time for cables to be installed and systems configured to network settings.
Training for users on sharing resources and accessing other systems.
